Texture – A Photo

I didn’t know what this was when I saw it in the fridge on my arrival.  Yellowy-green and ridged, and about the size of a football, it took up nearly half the bottom shelf.

It’s a papaya, and about four times the size of the ones available in the UK.  The contrast in the colours, between the rich orangey red of the flesh, the hard dark brown of the seeds, almost unexpected, given the rather bashed about look of its skin, inspired me to take the picture, before I knew it would be the perfect response to today’s weekly photo challenge.

The flesh is smooth and sweet, and delicious when cut with a generous squeeze of lime juice.  The seeds are shiny and hard, but fall away from the heart of the fruit with the merest encouragement from a spoon.

Half gave a generous portion for two people, and there is still half left for tomorrow.

We also call them pawpaws (that word looks so absurd when i write it now) and we like them very big too.

    • I’d not appreciated that pawpaw – it is an odd word isn’t it? – were the same as papayas. It was very good and now it’s finished I will have to buy another one tomorrow!
