Wonder – A Photo

I wonder about a lot of things, in both senses of the word.

There are things that puzzle me constantly: the success of certain stand up comedians, why some women choose to wear such ugly shoes, the popularity of Dan Brown’s novels, or why footballers are paid so much money.

But I am also amazed and inspired by the world around me; by the great and the tiny, by a mountain against the sky, how far starlight has travelled to get to us, or the intricate patterns of a spider’s web decorated with morning dew. It’s the wonder that we feel in the face of mysteries that cab drive our imaginations to create stories to explain them.  How great lands could float on clouds in the sky, or other civilisations could exist on a distant planet, or how a mediaeval craftsman learnt how to carve a gargoyle for a cathedral drainpipe.

At least it’s wonder and enquiry of all kinds that drives me to write.
